Retaining walls are one of those construction elements where precision at the set-out stage pays dividends throughout the rest of the build. Get the pile positions right from the start and the timber goes up cleanly. Get them wrong and you are looking at costly corrections that ripple through the programme.
This project involved working with a contractor on a multi-tiered retaining wall system, positioning piles, retaining wall sections, and block wall locations to match the structural engineer’s design. Using a total station on site, we set out each pile location and confirmed the alignment of the wall runs before any permanent work began.
What the Work Involved
The site had a significant level change across the property, with multiple retaining wall tiers stepping down the slope. Our role was to translate the design drawings into physical marks on the ground that the contractor could work to.
Each pile centre was set out and pegged. Wall alignment was confirmed using our total station to check that the wall faces would run true to the design. Offset stakes were left in positions clear of the excavation so the contractor had reference points throughout the construction process.
Why Set-Out Surveying Matters for Retaining Walls
Structural retaining walls are engineered to specific geometry. If pile positions shift even a small amount from the design intent, the engineering assumptions change. For walls with a structural engineer’s sign-off, staying within the design tolerances is not optional – it is a compliance issue.
Having a surveyor set out the pile positions also gives the contractor a clear record of what was marked on the ground, separate from the construction drawings. If a question arises later about positioning, there is documentation to refer to.
Working With Civil Contractors
We work regularly with civil contractors, builders, and earthmoving companies across Auckland on projects like this. Our goal is to be the kind of surveyor who makes the job easier rather than adding complication – clear marks, clear communication, and available when questions come up.
